Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin becomes head coach at California

The search for a new head basketball coach hasn’t gone particularly well (at least publicly) for the California Golden Bears, but now, there is a report circulating that they have landed a relatively big name in Tennessee Volunteers head coach Cuonzo Martin.

Jeff Goodman of ESPN reports that Martin, who captained Tennessee to a substantial run in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, is headed to the west coast, and this is a substantial coup for the Golden Bears. Xavier head coach Chris Mack publicly spurned the job, there were reports that Eric Musselman interviewed for the job multiple times, and to be honest, the search seemed to lack direction, but Martin is a great landing spot.

After three seasons as the head man at Missouri State, Cuonzo Martin has improved his record at Tennessee in each of his three seasons, from 19 wins in 2011-2012 all the way to 24 wins this past season, including a push to take Michigan to the final buzzer in the “Big Dance”. It will be interesting to see how Martin recruits on the West Coast, but given the circumstance, this is about as good of a name as Cal fans could reasonably expect.

The two scores that everyone in knoxville will be checking,
Auburn and tennessee. If it was hard for cuonzo to deal with a retired pearl, imagining the pressure on a rookie coach having to keep pace with pearl’s inevitable success.

I accept the guy can’t come back to UT, but part of me is going to go with pearl.
