Tuesday morning the stunning news came through that, just weeks after it seemed all was well on Rocky Top, Tennessee Volunteers head coach Cuonzo Martin in fact would not be sticking around to help build the program, rather he would be heading out west to take over the California Golden Bears.
So now, the Vols are looking to make a splash in hiring a replacement, and they’re reportedly interested in one of the hottest young coaches in the game–plus one with the most famous last name–in the form of Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino.

This past season, while his father couldn’t collect any NCAA Tournament hardware, Richard did garner a postseason trophy. He led the Golden Gophers through one of the more successful campaigns in recent years, culminating in a huge win over a very talented SMU team in the NIT final, instantly making the younger Pitino one of the hottest commodities on the market.
