Facebook has announced a new feature coming its mobile app that will allow people to find out if their Facebook friends are nearby.
Nearby Friends (original name, I know) is an optional feature that allows users to be notified when friends are in close proximity to you. Users will be able to choose what group of people can find their location – friends, close friends, or a specific list — or just have the feature turned off all together.
In order to share location with others, all users will have to have the feature enabled. If a friend doesn’t have the feature turned on, you won’t be able to see if they are close by.
So, whether you want to know if someone is close enough to meet up with or you are trying to avoid that one person you are friends with on Facebook out of sympathy, Nearby Friends should help you do that. Nearby Friends will be available on the Android and iPhone in the United States in the upcoming weeks.
Mike’s Musings: Call me crazy, but I view this to be a feature that would lead to more cases of stalking then setting up a get together with friends. If you want to hang out with someone, just call/text them and find out what they are doing. It’s really that simple.
