The Miami Heat shipped off Joel Anthony to the Boston Celtics earlier this year and as a result, he’s going to be staying in Boston by choice. While it appeared that Anthony may be opting out of his contract, the Celtics center will be staying on for another year after opting in on the next year of his deal.
Boston Celtics forward/center Joel Anthony will exercise his player option for the 2014-15 season and return to the C’s, a league source informed CSNNW.com.
Although Anthony isn’t too thrilled with the current rebuilding phase of the organization, passing up a sizable guaranteed salary is not something he’s willing to do, the source explained.
Anthony was traded to the Celtics as part of a three team deal with the Heat, Celtics and Warriors earlier in the season. He likely experienced a massive culture shock going from the NBA Finals contending Heat to the rebuilding Celtics, but his time spent with Brad Stevens’ team clearly has had an impact on Anthony and he’s forgoing the chance to sign with a contender over the summer to return to Boston.
