If you watch baseball long enough you just may seen something you have never seen before, and that’s what happened in the game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night when Martin Maldonado literally knocked the cover off a ball.
Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez fielded the hard hit ball to the hot corner in the top of the sixth inning, looked down awkwardly at the ball and made the best throw he could considering the circumstances.

You’ve no doubt heard the expression, “knock the cover off the ball” before if you’ve ever been to a baseball game as fans plea for their favorite player to hit the ball hard, but Maldonado took that expression to a new level tonight with his infield single that he’ll remember forever.
Considering he’s a lifetime .222 hitter and has only four hits on the short season as the Brewers backup catcher, there’s no doubt that literally knocking the cover off the ball will be on his career highlight film.
Naturally, you can’t talk about what Maldonado did tonight and not mention what Roy Hobbs did in The Natural.
