Denard Span activated from 7-day disabled list by Washington Nationals

In the midst of an intriguing early series with fellow National League heavyweight the St. Louis Cardinals, the Washington Nationals will have a key player return to the lineup on Saturday.

According to D.J. Short of HardballTalk, the team has activated outfielder Denard Span from the 7-day concussion disabled list:

The Nationals have activated outfielder Denard Span from the 7-day concussion disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, outfielder Steven Souza has been optioned back down to Triple-A Syracuse.”

Span sustained the injury when he collided with Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla last week. Span has a history of dealing with concussion issues, so the Nationals are surely inclined to exercise caution with his return. That means that Span has passed all the required tests and apparently made the team confident that he is good to return.

The center fielder is batting .222 so far this season. He is a career .282/.300/.361 hitter.
