NHL Playoffs 2014: David Backes Update

A scary moment occurred late in St. Louis’ 4-3 overtime win over the Blackhawks to take a 2-0 series lead in the NHL playoffs. Blues captain David Backes was the victim of a vicious head shot courtesy of Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook.

Backes would leave the game, and wouldn’t return. Seabrook was hit with a five-minute major for charging as well as a game misconduct. After the game, Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock would provide reporters with an update on his captain’s health status.

“How do you think he is?” Hitchcock said after the game via Jeremy Rutherford. “Not great. So, let the league deal with it.”

Seabrook is expected to receive a call from the NHL league offices before game three on Monday night from Chicago. While one could assume a suspension is likely for the Chicago blue liner, after the NHL’s response to Boston forward Milan Lucic’s spear to the man region of Danny DeKeyser,  it wouldn’t be surprising in the least if he is simply given a slap on the wrist.
