The Minnesota Wild are in the fight of their life with the Colorado Avalanche in Game 2 of their opening round series and that fight is both metaphorical and literal. Late in the second period of the game, Wild forward Kyle Brodziak got a bit too physical with Avalanche winger Brand Malone and ended up getting sent to the penalty box as a result.
But it’s not just that Brodziak picked up a penalty on the play, which lead to an aggressive power play attack by the Avalanche, it’s how he picked up the penalty. Brodziak either had something to say to Malone or he got his ha caught in his chin strap — and it’s unlikely to be the latter.
The Wild got lucky and held killed the penalty but they are already in a hole against Colorado and committing penalties and constantly having to send out the penalty kill unit isn’t a good strategy to pick up goals.
