Delino DeShields Jr., the son of former Major Leaguer Delino DeShields, is a top prospect in the Houston Astros system. After this weekend, however, it will be a while before he is known for anything other than this rather unpleasant picture.
After a frightening incident in a Double-A game Friday night in which DeShields took a hit-by-pitch to the face in the form of a 90 MPH fastball, his face was quite swollen (as one would assume is the case). You might not believe just how freaking swollen it is, however. In a photo passed along by Tanner Case (@ctcase10):

DeShields apparently has a broken cheek bone but did not lose any of his teeth (h/t Mike Axisa, Eye on Baseball). It seems impossible, after seeing that photo, to say that’s good news, but maybe that’s good news? I dare not venture to say, as that is a troubling picture and I’m sure DeShields will have to pass a number of tests before he can return to action.
But as his buddy Tanner pointed out, he did take a fastball to the face like a champ, so hat’s off to him for that and for having a sense of humor about it, if his the snap chat pictured above is any indication.
