The 2-2 draw between Carl Robinson’s Vancouver Whitecaps and Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy was anything but another boring tie. It had goals, action, late heroics, poor defending reminiscent of the J-League at its low points, and misses all around. You can never be bored when these two teams go at it.
Let’s take a look at the six things we learned, followed by player ratings for the Vancouver Whitecaps and Los Angeles Galaxy.
1. Teams trading misses early
Early on in the first half, Carl Robinson elected to start the young talent and bring in the veterans later, save for Kenny Miller. Seconds into the match, Andy O’Brien’s challenge on Robbie Keane forced a yellow card from Silviu Petrescu. David Ousted did collected the ensuing set piece, and the midfield war continued. Jay DeMerit and Ousted teamed up to prevent another attack from Keane in the sixth minute.
A shot from Russell Teibert had danger written all over it in the ninth minute, and the ensuing second chance from Kenny Miller sailed high. A corner in the 10th minute from LA was cleared aside. Baggio Husidic’s first shot in the 11th minute went over the bar.
2. LA and Vancouver continue to trade misses
Both the Galaxy and Whitecaps were still trading misses. A chance for Darren Mattocks in the 18th minute sailed over his head. A pass intended for Stefan Ishizaki in the 20th minute failed to reach him, but it looked tempting. A pass from Jordan Harvey intended for Mattocks was collected in the 22nd minute by Los Angeles goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.
In the 23rd minute, Teibert won the game’s first corner. Pedro Morales is Vancouver’s corner specialist, but his set piece was cleared. A shot from Keane in the 25th minute sailed wide right. Penedo collected the transition opportunity seconds later. A shot from Morales on a second volley in the 29th minute went wide left.
3. Onward for Stefan Ishizaki
A blistering shot by Miller was parried away by Penedo in the 32nd minute of play. In the 34th minute, a set piece from Morales was collected by Penedo. Baggio Husidic was cautioned seconds later for a foul on Steven Beitashour. A set piece in the 37th minute for LA resulted in a corner for Stefan Ishizaki.
Los Angeles took the lead on an Ishizaki goal in the 38th minute of play. Harvey could not clear the ball in time and the Galaxy went ahead, 1-0. In the 41st minute, a Morales corner was cleared. Another shot from Morales in the lone minute of first half stoppage time took a deflection and was collected.

4. Galaxy take shots at goal but miss
Early on in the second half, both teams were looking to add some goals and make this a contest. Kekuta Manneh was brought into the game to help add some speed and punch alongside Mattocks, as was Johnny Leveron. They both relieved Teibert and O’Brien, respectively. A shot from Miller in the 50th minute went over the bar. Beitashour had the right idea; the finishing just wasn’t there.
Miller was whistled for a foul on Juninho in the 54th minute. A shot for Keane in the 56th minute missed wide left. In the 57th minute, a Morales corner was cleared by Juninho. A shot from Dan Gargan in the 58th minute also missed wide left. There were cries for a penalty at the hour mark on Omar Gonzalez, but Petruscu would not award it.
5. Matttocks evens the score on a howler
Landon Donovan was shaken up on a tackle from Leveron in the 63rd minute of play, but the Galaxy were not awarded a free kick. Morales was replaced by Erik Hurtado in the 65th minute of play. His pass to Mattocks was on frame, but Mattocks missed wide right.
In the 67th minute, Mattocks finally got one to go through after Leonardo and Penedo collided into each other, forcing an easy tap. It was a bad defending read from Leonardo that forced the equalizer. A shot from Gershon Koffie in the 71st minute missed wide right.
6. It’s the late show in BC Place
Seeing that the game could be lost, Arena brought in Rob Friend and Gyasi Zardes to press the issue. In the 77th minute, Keane scored on a cross from Friend to make it 2-1 Los Angeles. This time, it was DeMerit being the guilty party in failing to mark the Galaxy captain. Another shot from Keane in the 80th minute was collected by Ousted. A cross from Beitashour in the 83rd minute was collected by Penedo.
But the lead was short-lived. Kekuta Manneh evened the score in the 86th minute with a possible Goal of the Week candidate. Darren Mattocks put the goal on a platter, adding an assist to the goal he scored earlier. A shot from Miller in the 89th minute missed wide right. Manneh nearly got his brace in the first minute of stopppage time but but Penedo saved it and he won a corner for Miller. A header from Rob Friend was saved by Ousted in the third minute of the second half stoppage time.
