The Milwaukee Brewers were able to continue their hot play to start the 2014 season this week. Their record for the season now sits at 13-5, and they have a chance on Sunday to win and take three of four games in a key division series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
They are in that position thanks in part to slugger Ryan Braun, who continues to play well in the season immediately following a lengthy PED suspension. In 16 games he is batting .292/.319/.600, good for a .919 OPS. He has five home runs and 13 RBI.
The home runs have been coming in bunches for Braun. He hit three against the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this month. On Saturday he delivered two more home runs, including this winning shot in the 9th inning off Pittsburgh closer Jason Grilli.
The Brewers have their work cut out for them if they want to stay atop a loaded NL Central in the long run, but if these early returns hold, they are a team built for just such a challenge with a former MVP in Braun, an emerging star in Carlos Gomez, and a solid top three in their rotation. Time will tell if this is just an early season flash or something they can keep up.
