Captain America: The Winter Soldier Dominates the Box Office for the Third Week in a Row

Despite another good fight from Fox’s latest animated feature Rio 2, the Marvel superhero adventure Captain America: The Winter Soldier has dominated the Box Office for the third week in a row.

The second installment in the Captain America franchise brought in an estimate $26.6 million over the weekend, bringing their film’s three week domestic total to approximately $201.5 million. Captain America got a bit of a jump on the foreign market as it was released about three weeks early overseas. Right now, the film has earned roughly $385.1 million in the foreign market which brings the film’s worldwide total to $586.6 million.

In second place this week is Rio 2. The animated adventure brought in an estimated $22.5 million over the weekend, bringing its two week domestic total to $75.4 million. This is just $5 million shy of where the original Rio was at this time back in 2011.Rio 2 did see an increase in the amount of theaters showing the film this weekend. If this continues into next week, we may see the bump the film needs to be on par with the first.

Coming in third this weekend is the inspirational film Heaven is for Real. The inspirational real-life tale follows the story of Todd and Sonja Burpo and their son Colton and his near-death experience and the meaning of it all. Heaven is for Real brought in an estimated $21.5 million. This brings the film’s total to $28.5 million.

Debuting in fourth place this weekend is the sci-fi thriller Transcendence. The film brought in an estimated $11.2 million at the Box Office this weekend. Unfortunately, this is less than half of what Johnny Depp’s last two films, Disney’s The Lone Ranger and Warner Bros. comedy Dark Shadows, made on their opening weekends.

Rounding out the Top 5 this week is the new parodic comedy from Marlon Wayans entitled A Haunted House 2. The film brought in an estimated $9.1 million over the weekend. Much like Transcendence, this is about half of what the first A Haunted House film pulled in on their opening weekend. This has to be somewhat of a disappointment considering some of the names who worked on this film.

Here is a look at the Top 10 at the Box Office this weekend courtesy of Box Office Mojo.
