Former UFC champion Chuck Liddell is very familiar with current light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira, who will challenge current title holder Jon Jones at UFC 172, from their time training together at The Pit under John Hackleman.
Liddell is confident that Teixeira has what it takes to become a UFC champion and he believes that his time will come on Saturday night in Baltimore.
Not only does Liddell believe Teixeira will win, but he believes that Teixeira will earn the finish within three rounds.
“I think [Glover] either hurts [Jones] with a punch and he shoots and submits him, or knocks him out,” Liddell said when speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I’m not sure which one, but it’s one of those things. Doesn’t get past [round] three.
“I thought style-wise it is a good matchup for him. He has the wrestling to hang in there with him on takedowns, if Jon Jones shoots in he has to be careful not to get caught in something, if he does get him down, Glover is really good at getting him off his back. I think the think that’s going to have the biggest effect is the power that Glover has. He hits very hard.”
Teixeira, who is riding a 20-fight win streak, has not tasted defeat since 2006. He has been victorious in all five of his UFC fights — including four finishes.
If Teixeira is able to get his hands on Jones like Alexander Gufstasson was able to do back at UFC 165, Jones could very well could suffer the first legitimate loss of his career.
