Richard Donner Gives a Few Details on The Goonies Sequel (Video)

There have been rumors about a sequel to the 1985 classic The Goonies for many, many years. Unfortunately, nothing has ever come of those rumors. However, as you all know, Goonies never say die! Earlier this month, we showed you a clip from TMZ where they spoke to Richard Donner, who as most of you are aware directed the original Goonies film. In that clip, he confirmed that there is indeed a sequel in the works.

TMZ caught up with Donner again this week, and the director has spilled a few more small details about the film’s production.

At first, the director plays coy, pretending to not know what The Goonies even was. I do have to say, Richard Donner seems like a pretty funny guy to be around. However, after a little more probing from the TMZ photog, Donner starts to give up just a little more about the potential film.

The photog asks Donner if he has been in contact with any of the former cast of the film since the news broke that he was thinking of making a sequel to the film.

“You’ll have to ask Steven.” Donner quickly replies.

Of course, we know that Donner is referring to legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who not only wrote the story for the original film, but also served as Executive Producer, Second Unit Director, and even did some of the film editing on the project.

Donner goes on to tell TMZ that the idea of the sequel was actually Spielberg’s idea, and that he has come up with a new story line, adding that Spielberg was right on.

When asked if any of the cast would be reprising their roles in the new film, Donner smiles.

“God knows. It’s up to them,” he says. “If they have any sense, they will. If they don’t, they won’t.”

I have to say that in the beginning, I was a little worried about the prospect of a Goonies sequel. There have been far too many instances where filmmakers and studios have taken a film that was so magnificent the way that it was, and tried to continue the story only to take away some of the magic from the original.

However, after knowing that two of the biggest pieces of the film, being Donner and Spielberg, are on board with the project, it certainly gives fans a little reassurance that this will be done correctly. Now, the only thing left to do would be to get the cast on board.

Here is a look at the complete video of the Richard Donner interview courtesy of TMZ.

There is still absolutely no other information on the film other than the words from the director himself. There has been no official announcement from the studio, casting moves, or anything else of the sort. However, I am sure that as the talks continue between the director and the rest of the players involved, we will start to see some movement one way or another.

What do you think of the potential of a Goonies sequel? Is this something you would see in the theaters? If so, where would you like to see the story go? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
