Thursday’s split schedule gives fantasy baseball owners a chance to pick up some stats from the six afternoon starts as well as the remaining five games scheduled for this evening. With 22 teams in action even on this travel day, there are some chances to pick up a midweek boost if you can find the right starting pitcher on the waiver wire.
To help you know who to target on a daily basis, I post my starting pitching pickups each afternoon (archive here where you can also set a bookmark for the daily updates). You can also see how my past picks have fared on the final slide of the post. All of my choices are available in at least half of ESPN leagues and their ownership percentage is included in parentheses.
Here are my picks for the day in the general order I would consider picking them up:
Felix Doubront-Boston Red Sox (1.0%)
Doubront has been solid in his last two outings allowing a total of five runs in 13.1 innings. His 5.48 ERA is elevated from a rough outing earlier this season against the Rangers, but his more recent outings have shown signs of improvement. His last start was his best of the year in which he struck out a season-high seven in his 6.2 innings against Baltimore.
Doubront and the Sox will be closing out their series against their rivals from the Bronx who Felix has fared well against in the past. Going up against the Yankees is always a risky matchup, so the fact that he’s the best choice out there shows there aren’t any sure things. However, I think Doubront will step it up and turn in a good start on Thursday night at Fenway as he takes on a struggling CC Sabathia.
