Tuesday night was apparently not a pleasant evening to be Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price.
The former Vanderbilt star was motoring along in the top of the fourth inning when Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer stepped to the plate. Moments later, the former batting champion ripped a would be single up the middle. But unfortunately for both Price and Mauer, the ball struck the Rays pitcher directly in the crotch, sending the Cy Young award winner to the ground.
Shockingly Price did what he could to get up in attempt to field the ball, seemingly more concerned with the out than his health – at least for a quick moment.
Mauer ended up beating out the play for a unique single which was followed by members of the Rays training staff meeting Price at the mound.
Thankfully Price’s cup did its job and saved his family jewels from utter devastation. Still, I can’t imagine a fastball hitting that hard piece of plastic at 125 mph is pleasant either way.
