The spotlight of stardom can get pretty warm and for Bryce Harper, it’s something he’s learning the hard way.
Just days after Harper was yanked by manager Matt Williams for a lack of hustle (ironically on a day where the game program featured a story on Harper’s hustle), the outfielder did it again.
Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against the Anaheim Angels, Harper hit a routine ground ball to the second baseman. The young talent decided to nonchalantly trot down to first base, just making it to the halfway point (give or take) by the time he had already been thrown out.
Rumors of a potential quad injury could be reason for the lack of hustle, though the fact he’s drawn the ire of Williams suggests that may not be an acceptable notion.
Should be interesting to see if Williams has anything further to say regarded Harper’s inability to get down the first base line with normal effort.
