Adam Wainwright on track to made scheduled start Sunday

The St. Louis Cardinals initially feared that ace starting pitcher Adam Wainwright would be forced to miss a start after he hyper-extended his knee at the end of his outing on Tuesday night.

After testing the knee out this week, Wainwright indicated that he will remain on track to make his regular turn in the rotation against the Pittsburgh Pirates this coming Sunday. Here is what Wainwright had to say about the injury upon testing it out on Wednesday (quotes from the St. Louis Post Dispatch):

I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little tenderness with complete extension. I’m already significantly better than I was last night. I already feel 50 percent better than I did.”

By their standards the Cardinals have stumbled out of the gates a little bit in 2014 with a 12-11 record thus far. That is not for lack of effort from Wainwright, however, as he has been his usual outstanding self through five starts: 4-1 record, 1.46 ERA, and 35 strikeouts in 37 innings. Good news for him and the Cardinals, then, that this injury is nothing more serious.
