After stopping 37 of 40 shots in his team’s loss in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series against the Boston Bruins, Jonas Gustavsson has been announced as the starting goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings in Saturday’s do-or-die Game 5 in Boston.
The move was confirmed on Friday by Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock.
Gustavsson was announced as the surprising starter on Thursday night after usually starter Jimmy Howard fell ill with flu-like symptoms, and was forced to miss the game. Howard, though apparently not well enough to start, will serve as Gustavsson’s backup, as of now.
