Pittsburgh Pirates place closer Jason Grilli on DL with oblique strain

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed closer Jason Grilli 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, according to a report from SI.com.

Grilli, who hasn’t pitched since blowing back-to-back saves against the Milwaukee Brewers last weekend, is being placed on the DL retroactive to April 21.

There were questions before the season began as to the durability of the 37-year-old Bucs’ closer, who is now 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA, four saves and seven strikeouts for the season.

In Grilli’s absence, Mark Melancon — 0-1/1.96 ERA/8 SO — will take over the closer’s role, according to the team.

Per the team’s releases, the Pirates have recalled reliever Jared Hughes from the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians to fill the roster spot vacated by Grilli.
