Illinois Illini head coach Tim Beckman knows he needs a serious upgrade in talent in his program and although he has some promising young players on his squad, they did not recruit as well they need to in 2013.
That’s changing in 2014.
On Friday, the Illini landed a commitment from one of their top targets when 4-star offensive tackle Gabe Megginson gave his pledge to the Illini.
The 6’5, 290-pounder attend Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville, Illinois.
According to Derek Piper of 24/7 Sports, this was an extremely important get for the Illini.
On Friday, they got their biggest commit of the class thus far with 247 Composite four-star offensive tackle Gabe Megginson. Illini assistants Greg Colby and A.J. Ricker were the lead recruiters for Megginson. News broke Thursday night that a commit was imminent, and on Friday, Megginson took an unexpected visit to Illinois and pledged orange and blue via Twitter.
Megginson is ranked as the 28th best offensive tackle prospect in the country, the fourth-best overall prospect in the state of Illinois and the 238th-best overall prospect in the class of 2015, according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings.
He had offers from the Arkansas Razorbacks, California Golden Bears and Syracuse Orange, among others.
