The Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero, 39, could be on his way to MLS by way of DC United. News broke yesterday that DC were front-runners to sign Del Piero.
A move to DC is being facilitated, according to media reports, by Inter Milan president Erick Thohir, who is also a co-owner for DC United. Reports also suggest Adidas is pushing for the move as well, as it would give their club a great name.
Del Piero was rumored to join an MLS side over the summer, but stayed with Sydney FC in Australia. He had previously spent 19 seasons with Juventus and won the Champions League in 1996 with them before making the move down under in 2012. The striker also scored 208 goals in 513 appearances with Juve, just astounding numbers. Internationally, Del Piero was just as decorated, winning a World Cup in 2006; along with a second place finish in the European Championships in 2000.
Even at age 39 Del Piero is still scoring goals for Sydney. He has 24 goals in 48 appearances with the club, and was rumored to be the next coach until he reportedly declined the offer. According to reports, he is being courted by teams from the US, China, and Japan.
This could be another big move for MLS, Del Piero is one of the best players to ever wear a shirt. The only problem with this is it isn’t a big name that resonates with fans across the continent (like David Beckham). However, Del Piero could vastly help a struggling DC team score goals and learn to be a team.
