There seems to be a catch to the story about Mike D’Antoni returning to the Los Angeles Lakers next season as the team’s head coach. While it has been reported by the Orange County Register that the Lakers will be bringing D’Anti back, Sam Amick from USA Today reports that D’Antoni isn’t so hot on returning to the team if it means he’ll be a lame duck coach.
According to Amick, the Lakers are hesitant to pick up D’Antoni’s 2015-16 option and that seems to be a sticking point for D’Antoni who has seen head coaches fired left and right by the Lakers.
According to a person with knowledge of the situation, D’Antoni is has some concerns about returning as a lame-duck coach and is pushing for the 2015-16 option to be picked up. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the discussions.
It’s a power play by D’Antoni who apparently has more leverage than we thought — or he has more of something else than we thought. But while it seemed we had finally reached resolution with the D’Antoni situation, he has gone and made it complicate once again. He can’t be blamed for pushing towards not wanting to be a lame-duck coach but we may also be watching D’Antoni set his own chair on fire.
