The Baltimore Orioles knew that first baseman Chris Davis was headed to the 15-day disabled list; they just weren’t totally sure when they were going to make it official because of some uncertainty around what the corresponding move would be.

Shortly before their game on Sunday afternoon against the Kansas City Royals, the Orioles made it official and placed Davis on the disabled list. Per Rich Dubroff of CSN Baltimore:

That makes Davis eligible to return the team on May 11th, but given the nature of oblique injuries he will likely be out for a longer period of time than that. Manager Buck Showalter acknowledged as much:

"I’m hopeful on the 11th. I’m not expecting it. It wouldn’t be very smart to think it’s a given…I was hopeful. Chris has never had this before, which is good, but he doesn’t have anything to gauge it by…The average time is a pretty definitive time that’s kind of followed through the years. It depends on where we caught it.”"

Players are often on the shelf for a couple months or so with such an injury. Davis continues to insist that he feels the injury is not too serious; the Orioles will hope that he is right and that they caught it soon enough to have him back sometime in the middle of May.
