Second-place Chelsea came into Sunday’s match at Anfield against first-place Liverpool trailing by five points. With three games left, Chelsea needed a win to close the gap and keep their Premier League title hopes alive.
Chelsea was playing a weaker than usual squad since the team was dealing with injuries lingering from their Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid mid week, and trying to rest players for the second leg this week.
Chelsea took a defensive approach in the game challenging Liverpool to get past them and did a solid job keeping them from scoring. Liverpool consistently had over 70 percent of the possession throughout the game but couldn’t get through the defense in the box, there were some shots on goal and some quality saves from Mark Schwarzer who was filling in for the injured Petr Cech.
Late in the first half there was an interesting moment when Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard slipped. This allowed Chelsea striker Demba Ba to get in on goal without a defender in front of him and goal keeper Simon Mingolet came out to challenge but Ba just shot the ball around him for the lead.
That 1-0 goal line held for most of the second half as Liverpool continued to pressure and take shots on goal, but Chelsea’s defense stood tall. In stoppage time of the second half, Liverpool got caught again while trying to pass thje ball back to the defender at midfield. Fernando Torres and Willian were going in on goal alone, and when Mignolet came towards Torres he just passed it over to Willian who walked the ball in.
Chelsea won 2-0 and they closed the gap atop the table to two points.
