Ron Francis was promoted to general manager by the Carolina Hurricanes today upon the announcement of Jim Rutherford stepping down.
Rutherford owns part of the team and will remain in an advisory role as team president.
The move seems to be in an attempt to revamp the team which hasn’t seen the playoffs since 2009.
“I look at this as a fresh start,” Francis said. “I don’t want to just kind of build a team that gets into the playoffs for one year. I would like to build it so that it’s a very solid franchise and we can do it on a yearly basis.”
At the top of his list of duties will be a decision about coach Kirk Muller and whether he will remain with the team. Muller is currently 80-80-27 over the course of three seasons. “In fairness, I think it’s a decision that kind of needs due process,” Francis said. With this statement, it seems likely that there will be a new coach behind the bench in the near future.
