The soccer world has rallied around Barcelona’s Dani Alves following a racial taunt he was subjected to during a game against Villarreal. While Alves was lining up to take a corner kick, a Villarreal fan tossed a banana onto the field towards Alves.
In a moment of brilliance, Alves picked up the banana, opened it and ate a piece before kicking the ball and continuing with the game. It was a moment that showed that racist taunts wouldn’t be tolerated, and more importantly wouldn’t have the desired effect.
Well Alves has called for action and thinks the banana tosser should be shamed, and in some regards that would almost lessen the powerful gesture Alves displayed during the game.
“If I could, I would put a photo of the fan on the internet so that he would be shamed,” Alves told Brazil’s Radio Globo, via Sky Sports.
Alves was proud of the wave of support that started with a social media campaign from fellow Brazilians and soccer players, including teammate Neymar who posted a picture of himself with a banana and the hashtag “we’re all monkeys.”
“I’m glad to be able to contribute in some way to the betterment of the world.
“It’s not only in football, this kind of thing should not exist anywhere. We’re in the 21st century, the world has evolved and we must evolve with it.
“I’m glad to have created this effect and hope it serves in some way to put a stop to these types of attitudes.”
