The San Francisco Giants pitcher, Matt Cain, was announced as a late scratch for tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres. This is due to sustaining a cut on the tip of his right index finger after practice this afternoon.

No further details were given about the severity of the cut. Any injury to the palm or fingers of a pitcher’s hand has the chance to greatly affect their throwing ability. Not only could it affect Cain’s grip of the ball, but depending on the severity, he could have less control of his pitches.

Cain is currently 0-3 with a 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 31 innings so far in the season.

Yusmeiro Petit will take his place on the mound. This will be Petit’s first start since late September. The game was also against the Padres where Petit allowed five runs on seven hits throughout less than four innings.

Cain does not have win throughout his five starts and has already given up five home runs throughout 35 innings.
