Manny Machado’s next rehab start is probably not going to be a rehab start.
After the Class-A minor league rehab game he was supposed to play in on Monday got rained out, it was questionable whether the Orioles might wait until after the Pirates series to activate their third baseman. Baltimore had an off day on Monday and have another one after the two-game Pittsburgh series before they head to Minnesota.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweeted out that the club does, in fact, plan to activate Machado for the series against the Bucs. In Sunday’s rehab start, Machado went 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and a walk. He was supposed to be the designated hitter on Monday, and there’s a strong chance that he will be the DH in his 2014 debut with Baltimore.
Machado has been on the shelf since the end of last season as he recovered from knee surgery stemming from an injury suffered in Tampa Bay.
