The Quail Hollow Club is a staple on the PGA Tour, and attracts one of the best fields for the Wells Fargo Championship. Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Zach Johnson, and Hunter Mahan headline a must watch event.
Steve DiMeglio of USA Today wrote an article detailing the recent changes to Quail Hollow. The famed green mile (holes 16, 17, and 18) has been lengthened, and all 18 greens are brand new. Hopefully, the changes will be well received because the PGA Championship is coming to Quail Hollow in 2017.
Even though there are about a dozen big names in the field, it is almost impossible to predict the winner. I doubt anyone picked Seung-Yul Noh to win last week, but he is a very capable player who some believe may soon be considered one of the best in the game. The talent level is so deep that predicting the outcome of an event is near impossible.
Just for kicks, I will choose a safe pick and a dark horse.
My safe pick is Rory McIlroy. He won the event in 2010 firing a 66-62 on the weekend for his first victory on the PGA Tour. More importantly, McIlroy is having a good season with four top 10s in six events. The painful loss at the Honda Classic is behind him, and it is time to get his first W since 2012.
Kevin Streelman is my dark horse. He has had a consistent year making 10 of 11 cuts, but besides his third place finish at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, he hasn’t done much damage on the weekends. He is due for a great week.
Please comment if there is a player who should be on everyone’s radar this week. Or, comment for any other reason too.
