Rays’ Ben Zobrist trying to cancel doubleheader

I originally dismissed a tweet from Marc Topkin saying that the Tampa Bay Rays’ Ben Zobrist was not on board with the doubleheader scheduled for Thursday. It turns out that the team is dead serious about not playing a doubleheader in Boston on Thursday.

With Wednesday’s game being postponed, Boston Red Sox officials made the decision that the game would be made up immediately as part of a doubleheader the following day, instead of on another day when the two AL East rivals would meet. The decision was made, according to Topkin, because the Dustin Pedroia bobbleheads, intended to be given to fans attending Wednesday’s game, could not be stored anywhere.

Ben Zobrist has been on the phone with the Player’s Union who are talking with Major League Baseball officials. A final decision will be rendered later Wednesday.

Zobrist is 100% in the right here. I can understand if there’s a problem trying to get the bobble heads to the fans. But forcing a doubleheader because you have nowhere to store them? Come on Red Sox. You’re one of the top money making teams in sports. Go rent out a storage unit. First month is only $1!

Zobrist is an idiot. The reason they scheduled the game for today is because if they scheduled it during the next trip to fenway the Red Sox would be playing 29 games in 28 days which is against the union contract.
