The Los Angeles Lakers said that they would be starting their coaching search immediately, and the team was not messing around. Reports indicate that the team will be interviewing at least six candidates within the next few weeks, including former NBA coaches and current college basketball standouts.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles will be interviewing George Karl, Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis, Jeff Van Gundy, Kevin Ollie and John Calipari. As an added bonus for Lakers fans, Ollie and Calipari will be visited by team personnel.
Of course, there are also rumors that the Lakers could be looking to convince Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher to retire and join the team as their bench boss.
It will likely be a long process for the Lakers, but they are not short on candidates.
Regardless of who becomes the Lakers head coach in 2014 following the departure of Mike D’Antoni, the team is looking to work hard at adding a big name coach to rally their current players and attract prospective free agents down the road.
With Ollie, Kevin Durant could become a real possibility.
