There have been plenty of reports that Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron could be working his way into the late-first round discussion in next week’s draft, but it appears that a number of scouts are as confused as the general public.
While McCarron is a capable signal-caller who has a good head on his shoulders and NFL size, Pro Football Talk states that “multiple scouts are befuddled” about McCarron being told he is a first-round talent.
As solid of a prospect as McCarron is and as well as he may be prepared for the jump to the pros, it would be a shock if he was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
There is always a chance that one team bucks conventional wisdom and views McCarron as a first-round pick — much like the Buffalo Bills and E.J. Manuel a year ago — but we will have to wait and see what takes place next Thursday before we know whether or not McCarron defies all odds and ends up in the first 32 picks.
