Orioles activate Manny Machado, option Lombardozzi

All that remained was an official announcement.

Manny Machado had arrived in Baltimore on Tuesday evening, expecting to make his 2014 debut against the Pirates. The problem with that was that the weather had other plans. Tuesday night’s game was rained out. Machado would have to wait until Wednesday. Then Wednesday night’s game was rained out.

On Thursday, the Orioles play the Pirates in a back-to-back doubleheader, with game one at 4:05 PM EST. Manny Machado has officially been activated according to the team Twitter and the unfortunate odd-man out is recent trade acquisition Steve Lombardozzi. Machado will not be in the starting lineup for game one, according to Britt Ghiroli, but he is available off of the bench. The expectation is that Machado will start the second game. Ryan Flaherty will start at third base for Baltimore in game one.

Lombardozzi was acquired by the Orioles from the Tigers in exchange for shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Lombo had been traded from Washington to Detroit as part of a package deal for Doug Fister. He played in 19 games for Baltimore at second base, hitting .292/.301/.333.
