There has been a lot said about Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston, who dodged rape allegations in late 2013 but is still finding ways to be a controversial figure to college football fans. His latest incident saw him “accidentally” shoplift some crab legs which cost him a $30 fine and a short suspension from the Noles baseball team.
But while all he did was steal crab legs this time, the backlash against the Heisman Trophy winner has been fierce and that’s not sitting well with everyone. CBS analyst and former quarterback Phil Simms has spoke out about Winston and basically told America to back up off him.
Simms’ rock solid defense: we all do stupid things in college so lay off.
Okay, maybe it’s not a ‘rock solid’ defense but Simms doe shave a point in that Winston is a college kid who is going to do stupid things primarily because he’s a college kid. But he’s also a Heisman Trophy winner and now standing alongside titans of the game he plays which means there’s a certain amount of expectation and respect that he should be displaying.
All he did was steal crab legs, but while Winston is just a college kid he’s being held in higher regard and that’s where the disappointment in him factors into things.
