World Series of Fighting 11 lost a title fight this past week when Welterweight champion, Rousimar Palhares pulled out of his scheduled title defense against Jon Fitch due to his mother being ill.
The promotion scrambled quickly to provide another exciting replacement bout when they announced today that Fitch will take on WSOF newcomer Jake Shields in the co-main event of the evening.
Shields, who was recently released from the UFC after losing to Hector Lombard at UFC 171, will get a stiff test in his first fight in the promotion.
Both Fitch and Shields were cut by the UFC while they were in the top 10 of the Welterweight division. Many believe that their less than appealing style was a major factor into their release.
With Fitch losing his shot at the title and Josh Burkman previously promised a shot after the Palhares vs Fitch bout, WSOF has a slight mess in the Welterweight division.
FanSided reached out to WSOF officials who confirmed that the Fitch vs Shields bout will not be a #1 contender bout. It will be interesting to see if Burkman is given the next shot at Palhares when the champion is set to return.
World Series of Fighting 11 will take place on July 5th and will be headlined by the Lightweight championship bout that pits recently minted champion Justin Gaethje against the undefeated Nick Newell.
