Sporting Kansas City vs Columbus Crew Preview

On Sunday the top two teams in the Eastern Conference will square off in Kansas City. Columbus have had a sensational season thus far, and are currently in first place atop the conference with 11 points from 7 matches. Meanwhile, KC are just a point off the pace in second.

“It’s a great opportunity for our team to play the best team in MLS last year, the champions and a very good team,” Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter said of Kansas City. The Crew are coming off of three straight draws, so they’re very hungry to get three points. The big stage is an opportunity for them to show they deserve to be in first place, and won’t back down from the defending champions.

Federico Higuain, who I included in my top five forwards a while ago, already has 4 goals this season, and will be looking to score in this massive contest. He also has 2 assists on the year, which is tied for the team lead. New goalkeeper Steve Clark has also been great for the Crew this year, totalling 21 saves.

The challenge for the Crew will be Kansas City’s attacking 4-3-3 formation manned by Graham Zusi and Dom Dwyer. They can attack with pace and have terrific midfield play. Captain Matt Besler will also have his back four in line for such a huge match.

Prediction: Sporting 2- Columbus 1. Look for Higuain to score for Columbus early, but KC will roar back at home led by winger Graham Zusi.

The match will be played on Sunday at 4:00 pm ET and be broadcast on NBCSN.
