Most fantasy baseball leagues end their scoring periods on Sunday making any pickups you make from the waiver wire today even more important since they’re basically buzzer-beaters as you try to get the points, category wins, or just straight stats that you need to have a successful week. If it’s starting pitching you’re after, check out my four potential pickups in the next few slides.
Each afternoon on Fansided, I post my daily pitcher pickups (archive here where you can also set a bookmark for the daily updates). You can also see how my past selections have fared on the final slide of the post. All of my choices are available in at least half of ESPN leagues, and their ownership percentage is included in parentheses. For each selection, I also include my perspective of the risk and reward for the scheduled start on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest risk and the highest reward.
Here are my options available for Sunday:
Collin McHugh-Houston Astros (48.2%)
Get McHugh if you still can, since his early success has made him an extremely popular pickup. It’s easy to see why since the 26-year old has been dominant in his first two outings for the Astros.
He’s allowed just one earned run in his first two starts this season allowing just five hits over 15.1 innings striking out 19 and walking just three. He and the Astros finish their weekend series against the visiting Mariners as McHugh will be opposed by Brandon Maurer who was shelled in his last start by the Rangers and hasn’t made it through the fifth yet in either of his two starts this season.
There’s still some risk with McHugh since he’s not a fully proven commodity, but he’s been so outstanding in his first two starts and is in such a good matchup that he definitely merits the top target spot for Sunday’s starters.
