Jonny Gomes blasts grand slam for Red Sox (Video)

The Boston Red Sox are hosting one of the elite teams in the American League this weekend as they face the Oakland A’s at Fenway Park.

Trying to jump out to an early start in Saturday’s game, the Red Sox rallied against fringe-starter Tommy Milone. They had a scoring chance early as they loaded the bases for the always-entertaining Jonny Gomes in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Gomes came through in a big way, sending a line drive over the Green Monster in left for the grand slam.

The Red Sox value Gomes (and his beard) for a number of reasons, many of them in the locker room and in the community. As for consistent offense, they cannot necessarily count on him for that. So far 2014 has been no exception as Gomes is batting a pedestrian .231/.333/.400 so far. But he can still come through with a key hit when he runs into one, something he showed here as the Red Sox jumped on the A’s early.
