The Pittsburgh Pirates have found themselves in a little bit of a hole to start off the 2014 regular season. The Bucs (11-18) are currently a half game behind the Chicago Cubs and sit at the bottom of the National League Central.

They lost their primary catcher in Russell Martin for a little while longer after placing him on the 15-day disabled list back on April 26. Now it appears that they’ll take a little bit of a blow but this time in the bullpen.

The Pirates have placed right-handed relief pitcher Stolmy Pimentel on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Pimentel has been showing a little bit of promise after posting a 2.61 ERA over 20 and two-third innings of work this year with the big league club.

With Pimentel heading to the DL, the Pirates have recalled right-hander Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis. He’ll be taking Pimentel’s spot on the roster until he recovers.

Right-hander Vin Mazzaro was also recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. He was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh at the end of Spring Training but decided to stay with the franchise instead of looking for somewhere else to play. With two men coming up and one going down, the Pirates optioned righty Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cumpton allowed four runs off seven hits over five and two-third innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. His ERA now sits at 4.26 on the season. He’ll have another opportunity with the big league club if another one of their relievers need to spend some time on the disabled list.
