The Seattle Mariners have optioned outfielder Abraham Almonte to Triple-A Tacoma today.
The 24 year old center fielder entered Spring Training with winning the start job on his mind and did exactly that. He began the season as Seattle’s leadoff hitter but it hasn’t necessarily worked out.
Almonte has struggled at the plate so far this season as he’s only batting just .198/.248/.292 across the line with five doubles, one triple, one home run and eight RBI’s off 21 hits through 106 at-bats. Almonte was benched during yesterday’s contest as he was replaced by Michael Saunders in center.
Seattle appeared to be pretty confident in the young outfielder but it looks like their patience have officially run out. At least for now. This won’t be the last time he makes a run with the big league team but it he’ll have to prove himself all over again.
With Almonte heading back to the Minors, this will be the perfect opportunity for Saunders to lock up that center field job.
