WWE Extreme Rules; May 4, 2014

Sunday night, the first special event (remember, they’re not called pay-per-views anymore) since WrestleMania will take place as WWE presents the 2014 edition of Extreme Rules, live on the WWE Network.

The build for this show has been quite interesting to say the least, and the card is stacked with three hours of action.

Here’s a look at the card for Sunday’s event:

Match Card

  • El Torito vs. Hornswoggle (WeeLC)
  • Alexander Rusev vs. R-Truth and Xavier Woods
  • Paige vs. Tamina Snuka (Divas Championship)
  • Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena (Steel Cage)
  • Cesaro vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Jack Swagger
  • Big E vs. Bad News Barrett (Intercontinental Championship)
  • The Shield vs Evolution
  • Kane vs. Daniel Bryan (Extreme Rules match for WWE Championship)

The build for the John Cena-Bray Wyatt contest has been especially good, as with anything that Wyatt has been involved in since his call up to the main roster late last year. You would think that with Cena winning the first battle in New Orleans back at WrestleMania, this one should be Wyatt’s to take.

Also we get the Intercontinental Championship being showcased on a special event–for once. After what was a pretty exciting tournament over the past few weeks on television, Wade Barrett continues his rise back to prominence and he’ll look to cap that off with a win over Big E.

We also have the much anticipated battle between Evolution and the Shield, as well as the first title defense for Bryan since he won it all at WrestleMania.

Be sure to follow along below, beginning with the pre-show at 7:30 PM ET, as we update the coverage live as it happens:

El Torito vs. Hornswoggle (WeeLC Match)

There are midget announcers as well as a midget ring announcer for the introductions. El Torito out first. Hornswoggle out next with 3MB,

The two go at each other right in the middle of the ring to get started. El Torito hits a suicide dive onto the outside on all of 3MB.

El Torito brings a chair into the ring and uses it to set up a Bronco Buster on Hornswoggle.

Hornswoggle eventually gets a ladder in the ring but misses the splash attempt on El Torito.

Now, we have a commercial. Yes–a commercial on a special event in the middle of a match.

Back from commercial, everyone is brawling on the outside, including Los Matadores and 3MB, using the weapons on the outside.

Back in the ring, Hornswoggle has the upper hand on Torito, beating him down with the chair. On the outside, Hornswoggle clears the mini announce table. He NAILS the elbow from the apron, putting Torito through the table. The crowd breaks into a “This is awesome!” chant.

Hornswoggle then beats Torito down with a chair in the ring. After Slater goes through a table on the outside, Torito gets out of trouble, and as everyone tries to get involved, Torito hits a cross body on 3MB and Los Matadores, going through a table and the ladder.

After more back and forth, Torito hits a plancha through a table on Hornswoggle for the pin.

Winner: El Torito

Main Show:

Rob Van Dam vs. Jack Swagger vs. Cesaro

RVD out first followed by Jack Swagger and then the King of Swing himself, Cesaro, accompanied by Paul Heyman.

The three men square off in the center of the ring and begin brawling. RVD hits a nice spot with Rolling Thunder over Swagger where he then monkey flips Cesaro on top of him.

Loud chants of “RVD!” from the New Jersey crowd in this one.

After some back and forth, RVD hits a power bomb onto Cesaro on the floor. Cesaro stays on the floor while RVD and Swagger battle in the ring.

Cesaro gets back into the ring and starts the swing on Swagger! RVD breaks it up mid way, though. Swagger gets RVD locked into the Patriot Lock but Cesaro breaks it up.

Cesaro hits a HUGE suplex off the top rope to Swagger, but RVD hits the frog splash immediately after and gets the pin. Swagger is eliminated.

RVD then begins to get worked over by Cesaro with suplexes. Now the crowd is chanting for Cesaro.

The battle gets to the outside where RVD gets the upperhand. He drapes Cesaro over the rail and hits the spin kick from the apron! ECW chants begin to ring out.

A trash can is then brought into play in the ring. RVD heads to the top but misses with the frog splash. Cesaro hits the neutralizer onto RVD on the can for the win.

Winner: Cesaro

Alexander Rusev vs. R-Truth and Xavier Woods

Lana makes her way out to introduce Rusev. She dedicates the match to Vladimir Putin. Rusev starts pummeling both before the match even starts on the outside. Woods was taken out so Truth and Rusev officially start the match. Truth actually starts to get some offense in and takes Rusev down a few times.

Rusev eventually starts dominating Truth and hits the camel clutch for the win.

Winner: Rusev

Backstage segment with Evolution.

After the onslaught by the Shield early, Evolution takes over.

When Ambrose hits the ring, he takes out Orton and then HHH.

The Tables eventually turned and Evolution starts to pick apart Ambrose until he mounts the comeback against HHH. He makes the hot tag to Reigns who CLEANS HOUSE!

They hit the triple power bomb on Batista but HHH makes the save.

HHH hits a pedigree on Reigns, but he kicks out! Then an RKO, but he kicks out of that too.

The two teams then start brawling into the crowd. HHH and Orton throw Ambrose down a flight of steps.

Seth Rollins JUMPS FROM THE STANDS ONTO HHH AND ORTON!

Back in the ring, Reigns hits the Superman punch and a spear onto Batista for the win!

Winners: The Shield

Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena (Steel Cage Match)

Cena is out first, followed by Wyatt.

Bray gets the upper had early on as the match starts. This Jersey crowd is completely behind Wyatt. Cena gets the comeback going but as he tries to escape, he’s met by Rowan.

Wyatt gets back on the offensive for a while, with some help from the outside.

Cena tries to escape again but the Wyatt Family is waiting again, which makes no sense because he could still jump down and win.

Bray stays in control for a while before Cena mounts the comeback with a drop kick after a failed AA.

Cena eventually gets enough offense mounted for a pinfall, but Wyatt kicks out.

John gets to the door, but his attempt is stopped by Rowan and Harper.

He then tries to climb out. but gets tossed back in.

Harper is in the cage, which, you know, is suppose to keep people out. Hooray, technology.

Cena hits an AA from the top rope but Harper makes the save.

John gets the upper hand on Wyatt again and as he tries to escape the lights go out! A small choir child is singing “He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands!” over a muffled mic. Wyatt hits Sister Abigail and escapes for the win!

Backstage segment with Bray Wyatt.

Video montage of main event.

Daniel Bryan vs. Kane (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Kane gets in the offense early hitting Bryan with the Singapore cane.

The Big Red Machine is dominating the early portion of the match. If this were the year two-thousand-and-one, one would think that Kane would have a chance at victory. Alas, Katie Vick is still nowhere to be found.

Kane hits a side slam on Bryan on a chair in the ring, but Bryan kicks out.

The action moves to the outside where Bryan hits a tornado DDT off the announce table.

Bryan and Kane fight all the way back to the backstage area.

Kane then backdrops Bryan onto a car. Bryan hits Kane with a tire iron from the trunk of the car. The champ then puts Kane onto a pallet on a forklift. He lifts Kane up and drives him toward the ring! He props him up, tilts him forward and dumps him in the ring.

Bryan gets onto the pallet and hits the head butt! Kane kicks out!

Kane hits a chokeslam for a near count. Bryan then hits an onslaught of chair shots and kendo stick tags. Bryan locks in the YES lock with the stick but Kane gets to the outside.

Kane hits Bryan with a chokeslam through the table on the outside!

The Big Red Monster lights a table on fire! Bryan hits Kane through the table and then nails the running knee for the win!

Winner: Daniel Bryan
