The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Earns the Top Spot at the Box Office This Weekend

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came swinging into theaters this weekend, leaving all the other films in his wake and earning the Top Spot at the Box Office this weekend.

Spidey’s web-slinging adventures brought in an estimated $92 million over the weekend. While this fell short of the $137 million brought in by The Amazing Spider-Man and the $152.4 million Spider-Man 2 opened to on their opening weekends.

Unfortunately, this is not exactly a fair comparison. The Amazing Spider-Man opened on a Tuesday instead of a Friday, and was released over the Fourth of July holiday. The same can be said about Spider-Man 2. Back in 2004, the film opened on a Wednesday and was also over the Fourth of July holiday.

Now, things are not all bad for the web-slinging superhero. The film has had just a little under 2 weeks in the foreign box office already, earning the film $277 million. This brings the film’s worldwide gross to an estimated $369 million.

Falling one spot from last week, earning the number two spot this weekend is The Other Woman. The film brought in an estimated $414.2 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s two week totals to $47.3 million.

In the third spot this weekend is the inspirational tale Heaven is for Real. The film brought in an estimated $8.7 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s three week domestic totals to $65.6 million.

Falling from the second spot down to the fourth position this weekend is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The patriotic superhero brought in approximately $7.8 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s five week domestic total to $237 million; however, when you add in the $442.7 million the film has earned in the foreign markets, Cap’s worldwide gross is approximately $679.8 million thus far.

Finishing out the Top 5 this weekend is the animated adventure Rio 2. The film brought in an estimated $7.6 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s four week domestic total to $106.5 million. Rio 2 has earned a majority of his money in the foreign market $286.6 million. This brings the film’s worldwide gross to $393 million.

While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may see a bump next weekend; however, he will be facing some serious competition in the weekend to follow when Spidey will go head-to-head with the King of Monsters himself, Godzilla. It will certainly be an interesting battle between the two titans.
