Carolina Hurricanes fire head coach Kirk Muller after 3 seasons

After just three seasons behind the bench in Carolina, the Hurricanes have seen enough of head coach Kirk Muller and have fired him. According to NHL.com, Muller will be followed out the door by two of his assistants as well, John MacLean and Dave Lewis.

New general manager and executive vice president Ron Francis released a statement on the firing, thanking Muller for his time with the team but explaining that he didn’t fit the vision the team has for the future.

Per NHL.com:

“We thank Kirk, John and Dave for their time and effort during the past three seasons. Kirk and his staff worked very hard, but we feel that the team is in need of a fresh start at this time.”

The writing was on the wall for Muller as not only was there a new general manager stepping in, but Muller posted an average record of 80-80-27 during his three seasons as head coach. It’s a new era for the Hurricanes and Ron Francis is going to install the guys he wants behind the bench and clearly isn’t going to tolerate what the old regime was willing to.
