NBA rumors: Lakers interested in UNC's Roy Williams

The Los Angeles Lakers are going after some big name coaches at the collegiate level while they search for a replacement for former head coach Mike D’Antoni. The latest addition to their list of potential coaching candidates is North Carolina’s leading man Roy Williams.

From Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times:

The Lakers’ interview list for a new coach keeps growing. North Carolina Coach Roy Williams was added to it most recently. It’s not the first time Williams will have been approached by the Lakers. He told them in 2004 he was not interested in coaching them after Phil Jackson’s first tour ended with the team.

Williams now joins the likes John Calipari, Kevin Ollie,  Byron Scott, George Karl and Jeff Van Gundy as a potential Lakers coach.

It is highly unlikely that Williams would ever leave Chapel Hill for a job in Los Angeles, but crazier things have happened and there is no doubt that the Lakers will at least give a run at Williams the old college try.

No matter who the Lakers land, there is no doubt they will be attempting to make a huge splash.
