Russell Henley leads The Players Championship after shooting a seven-under 65 that included nine birdies and a double-bogey. Henley won earlier this year at the Honda Classic, and has become one of the best young talents on the PGA Tour. As a two-time winner, he should be able to handle his nerves moving forward.
With virtually no wind and soft course conditions, TPC Sawgrass was more of a picnic in the park than a major test during the morning wave.
Eight golfers are currently tied for second place at five-under (67). 2008 Players Champion Sergio Garcia is among the group at five-under. Garcia got his round to six-under through 13, but bogeyed the par-4 fifth (his fourteenth hole) to move back to five-under where he finished.
Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Gary Woodland, Scott Stallings, Brian Stuard, and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano are tied with Sergio at five-under.
Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson, and Scott Brown are tied for tenth at four-under (68). John Huh is off to a fast start at four-under through six.
One of the wild rounds of the morning wave belonged to Zach Johnson. Johnson had eight birdies, six pars, three bogeys, and a double-bogey to shoot a three-under 69 (T14).
The wind is picking up for the afternoon wave, but the course conditions remain soft. Be on the look out for more low scores.
