Two top ten Lightweights will square off against one another on July 26th at UFC on FOX 12 in San Jose, California. No. 3 ranked Josh Thomson will take on surging contender and No. 10 ranked Michael Johnson.
This fight comes only a day after the UFC announced the first bout on the card, a Light Heavyweight tilt between Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Josh Thomson was one victory away from a UFC title shot against Anthony Pettis, but former champion Benson Henderson had other plans. When the two met in January, Henderson ultimately came away with the controversial decision victory.
Thomson broke his thumb in the bout, which severely hindered his abilities in the cage. After the fight, Thomson made it seem likely that he would retire. When the UFC offered him a fight in San Jose, his backyard, he could not turn it down.
Michael Johnson has been on fire as of late, winning his last three fights in a row. Johnson has improved leaps and bounds over the last year and seems poised to make a run at the title. A win over Josh Thomson in July may very well cement his No. 1 contender’s status.
