The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship began excellently for the defending gold champions. Sweden was able to capitalize on a 3-0 win over Denmark, proving they are in it again for the win.
Mikael Backlund was a star throughout the game, scoring two goals in the first period.
“Scoring twice was a good feeling,” said Backlund. “Going into the first game, you are always a bit nervous.”
Gustav Nyquist had the third goal.
Goalie Anders Nilsson made 21 saves to create the shutout. It also marks the ninth straight win over Denmark since 2003.
