Head coach Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams made history on Saturday in the 2014 NFL Draft with their selection of Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to ever be taken in the event. The Rams selected him in the 7th round, just as the event was coming to a close, and immediately the impact was felt around the country and the league.

That impact around the league also includes merchandising sales as already the orders for a St. Louis Rams Michael Sam jersey are “ridiculous.”

Given what this all means for not just sports, but society in general, this is really no shock. There’s no telling that he will even make that team yet as a 7th round selection as that’s never a guarantee with someone taken that late, but he’s already making his presence felt.

Sam fell so far in the draft due to some shaky workouts, mainly at the NFL Combine back in February where he looked like anything but the reigning Co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
