The 2014 NFL Draft is in the books and there were a number of interesting stats and numbers to come out of this year’s event that forced draft junkies to wait an extra two weeks for the seven round event.

First, the draft produced record ratings, thanks in large part to Johnny Manziel, the SEC produced the most draft picks in what is becoming the norm, the LSU Tigers led the way with nine players drafted and the Texas Longhorns didn’t have a player drafted for the first time since 1938.

However, the most startling number comes courtesy of Jamie Newberg who on Monday tweeted that 48 percent of all draft picks came from four states.

If you follow college football recruiting, then you know that Georgia, Florida, Texas and California are hotbeds for talent as a plethora of four and five-star recruits come out of these four states.

To think that nearly half of the 256 players taken in the draft hailed from these states is remarkable. Naturally, Texas and California are two of the largest states in the union, but still this is an eye-opening statistic. It’s no wonder the SEC and ACC led the way with the most draft picks as they can have their pick of the litter from Georgia and Florida.

It’s also rather shocking that the University of Texas failed to have a single player drafted considering the talent pool to work with in the Lone Star State. Something tells me Charlie Strong will change that rather quickly as he had four players drafted, including three in the first round.
